Financial Controller
It all begins with an idea.
Dallas, TX, United States
This is a unique opportunity to join a growing investment group focused on acquiring and optimizing industrial businesses. The firm operates multiple portfolio companies across asset-heavy industries, with a hands-on approach to financial leadership and operational improvement.
The Controller will play a key role at the holding company level, overseeing financial operations across multiple subsidiaries while driving long-term strategy and professionalizing financial processes. This role is positioned as a stepping stone to the CFO position, offering the right candidate direct exposure to M&A transactions, financial restructuring, and strategic initiatives across a diverse portfolio. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, balancing hands-on financial management with high-level strategic thinking.
Key Responsibilities
Full-Cycle Accounting Operations: Oversee full-cycle accounting operations across the portfolio including general ledger management, financial statement preparation, variance analysis, treasury management, capital project accounting, budgeting and forecasting, and coordination with external auditors and tax compliance.
Financial Leadership: Lead, and develop a team of 4-5 accounting and finance professionals to support financial operations across multiple portfolio companies.
ERP Optimization: Enhance and optimize Microsoft Dynamics reporting capabilities, developing value-added reports to improve financial insights and decision-making.
M&A and Strategic Growth: Partner with senior leadership to conduct due diligence, integrate acquisitions, and optimize financial structures.
Operational Efficiency: Identify and implement best practices to enhance financial controls, reduce inefficiencies, and improve reporting.
Portfolio Oversight: Provide financial visibility across all business units, ensuring consistency in reporting, compliance, and strategic planning.
Profitability Analysis: Develop data-driven insights to improve margins and drive sustainable financial performance.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will bring a combination of technical proficiency and leadership qualities, excelling in the following areas:
Hard Skills:
7+ years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably in multi-entity investment groups, holding companies, or asset-heavy industries.
Full-Cycle accounting expertise; ability to execute a financial closing process.
Deep expertise in financial reporting, GAAP compliance, and financial controls across multiple business units.
Strong proficiency in ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics preferred)
Experience with M&A processes, including due diligence, financial modeling, and post-acquisition integration.
Advanced financial analysis capabilities, with a track record of identifying opportunities for growth and efficiency improvements.
Advanced education and certifications such as CFA or CMA (preferred)
Soft Skills:
Entrepreneurial mindset, with a proactive approach to solving complex financial challenges.
Leadership experience, with a focus on developing and mentoring high-performing finance teams.
Strategic vision, with the ability to balance long-term planning with day-to-day operational execution.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, enabling collaboration across portfolio companies, investors, and executive leadership.
High adaptability, excelling in fast-paced environments where priorities shift dynamically.
Are You the Right Fit?
This role is ideal for a financial leader who wants to move beyond traditional accounting – we're not looking for a bean counter. The right candidate will not only master the numbers but will thrive on explaining the "why" behind them and driving strategic improvements. You should be energized by:
Taking a proactive role in business strategy, looking beyond historical data to identify trends, opportunities, and potential roadblocks
Working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same and priorities can shift rapidly
Collaborating closely with leadership across multiple business units to solve complex operational and financial challenges
Rolling up your sleeves to implement solutions, not just identify problems
Building and optimizing financial processes that can scale with rapid growth
The ideal candidate will view this role as an opportunity to develop into a strategic business partner while gaining exposure to M&A, operational optimization, and executive leadership – ultimately preparing them for a CFO position.
